The Fab Four of modern cricket and who's next? - Kohi, Root, Williamson and Smith

Fab Four

The cricketing fans and commentators all over the world has gone on talking about the Fab Four. Virat Kohli, Joe Root, Kane Williamson & Steve Smith. The world agrees that they are great players and they have proved it time and again. But this doesn't stop people from comparing them to other batsmen. Who else can join this elite club? Rohit Sharma has been a great batsman, so does Warner, what about Quinton de Kock?

Let me capture in statistics why these 4 are such great batsmen and no one else got into the Fab 4.

One of the biggest factor for the fab four club was their age. When they were playing, players such as De Villiers, Kallis and Sangakara were on peak of their performance, but the age factor of Fab Four made critics awe, because they were the future.

Kohli Williamson Root Smith

Look at averages in all formats before before they turned 25. These 4 are top of this list for the period 2010 to 2015. Kohli tops the table with his impressive form in all formats. His excellent average in T20 gives him the edge over the other 3.

Lets now try to find who has the best performance in the next 5 years and there has been no Fab Four in the next generation of batsmen after them.

Best modern batsmen

in the period since 2016, only Babar Azam has a higher avergae than the Fab Four before turning 25.
He has actually been better than the Fab Four. But there is no one even close to him. De Kock comes close with almost a 9 point difference in average.

In fact if you look at runs scored before 25 since 2000, Babar Azam still tops the list. The fact that Pakistan doesn't play a lot of cricket makes him an underrated player, but his performance in South Africa and Australia has also been impressive.

If we look at statistics for more than 4000 runs and look at players averages of all time, Javed Miadad tops the list with Azam and Root next. This proves that how great they are.

The Fab four will remain part of this discussion for decades to come. The fact that Four such greats started playing almost around the same years for four great Test playing nations is a privilege for cricket fans of our times.

We would still be watching for the greats of this decade. Who among the recent debutantes will rule this decade? Let us know in the comments section below.
